What a year to begin my tenure as President of the Lancaster-Lebanon Association of Educational Office Professionals!
Now that the year is underway, I hope that you have all settled into your “new” routines for the 2020-2021 school year. I know that this year is going to bring many new challenges as we navigate through this interesting and most unusual time. With this in mind, I have chosen for the theme of LLAEOP this year: GROW & BE BETTER. This theme developed over the summer, as I began to contemplate how I was going to lead our organization through the current COVID-19 pandemic. After having cancelled several of our events and meetings over the last couple of months, I began to fear that we may not be able to have this year as usual. However, as the LLAEOP team began to meet and brainstorm on how we could continue to support our members, I became overwhelmingly encouraged and excited. I realized that though things may look a little different and not go as smoothly as we think, I kept revisiting a concept that is constantly fostered in the education field: “A Growth Mindset”. Carol Dweck, the writer of the same titled book, summarizes what it means to have a growth mindset, “…love challenges, be intrigued by mistakes, enjoy effort, and keep on learning.” Knowing that this year, with its many challenges was going to take a little more effort on our part and is definitely going to be a learning experience for us. We all are going to come out on the other end of this with some new knowledge, a whole lot of growth, and we will be the better for it.
… And we hope that LLAEOP can be a part of that journey.
Please consider joining us this year! Even though, we may not be meeting in-person, the team has come up with some amazing ideas for serving you our members, connecting us together, enriching our lives, both professionally & personally, and supporting you as best as we can.
We will begin this year meeting virtually with the hope that in the new year, we may be able to come together in-person. We will be working diligently to bring back the newsletter “The Collaborator” with helpful member articles and resources and we are going to introduced virtual Lunch & Learns. These will be informal voluntary training sessions or presentations, about 30-40 minutes, that take place during lunch. Though we cannot provide lunch during the sessions, those that join could win a free lunch! We also hope to update the website this year with resources for our members and to be more of a hub for all things LLAEOP.
Looking forward to seeing you all soon!
Justin W. Johnson, LLAEOP President
